It’s timely (me starting this blog again), so I suppose I have to do it. These lists are interesting though, if a little repetitive once you browse around what other people are saying.

Perhaps that’s a sign that only a handful of truly great albums are released each year? Or perhaps it’s a sign that we’re incapable of looking beyond media opinion when it comes to choosing what we like/buy?

It would seem that the majority of recorded music is not selling at all, with 85% of available albums not selling a single copy this year! Back catalogues don’t seem to hold the value that we perhaps assumed they would. Are we just so over saturated with new releases that the thought of buying something old doesn’t even cross our minds?

In any case, favourite album of the year lists are relevant, and my list is predictable. But I truly love each of these records, so I stand by my individualism!

TV On The Radio – Dear Science

Ok, so no big shock there. I had such expectations of this record that I just knew I was in danger of ruining it for myself. But it delivers such well crafted pop masterfulness it’s hard to fault a single moment.

I was already a huge fan, and this is just more betterness, delivered perfectly, with hand claps a plenty.

Shearwater – Rook

This isn’t in all of the lists I’ve seen, but it should be. However, I wasn’t completely blown away the first time I listened, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Filled with the most beautiful dynamics, haunting vocals, stunning imagery, and simply great tunes. And whilst it might not make any immediate impression in terms of production, I think it’s perhaps the best engineered album I’ve heard all year. (More on the subject in posts still formulating in the back of the brain…)

Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago

It’s all been said already. Gorgeous harmony, and such genuine emotional commitment. Perfect for cosy winter evenings.

Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes

Lush harmonies, rich folk rock Americana with Pet Sounds infused ambience. What’s not to like?

Jenny Lewis – Acid Tongue

Perhaps a bit of a wildcard this one.. I’ve not really seen it in other lists. It’s nothing new, but it’s done really well, and Jenny’s voice is as fantastic as ever. The recording has such warmth that I just want to hear it again and again.. especially the bit when Elvis Costello jumps out to bite you!
