About James

There used to be a more long winded version of my story here. But then I read it back and realised it was a bit silly, and I dunno, felt like I was trying to show off or something. Which raised all kinds of “why am I writing a blog” questions, to which I finally concluded that a certain amount of self-indulgence is kinda what makes the world go around.. or something.
So anyway, in more of a nutshell form, the author of this blog can be summarised thus:
As a musician I’m primarily a guitarist but can occasionally be seen playing other things. You can currently see me playing guitar for Victor Menace!!!, and bass guitar for Ruth Theodore. Once upon a time I played guitar for the 90s pop band North & South. I had green hair. Those were some crazy days.
As a sound engineer I have my own studio (or huge burning hole in my pocket) in Hackney, London. It’s inner workings will be documented on this site one day.. Recently I have engineered recordings for Ruth Theodore, Nathan Ball, Super Luckies, Tofu Love Frogs, Alejandro Toledo, and Death Cats. Over time, I’m getting better at this…
As co-owner of a record label I spend a large amount of time in the spirit of releasing and promoting records. As brilliant ideas go, I like this one a lot.. but financially it’s about as stupid as opening a sweet shop next door to Willy Wonka’s factory.
As a computer programmer I generally work on a freelance basis, mostly on PHP/Rails related projects, but have worked on a wide range of technologies over the last 10 years or so.. from large C++ applications through to JavaScript hacks. Currently I work for Squiz UK, developing on their Open Source CMS, MySource Matrix. I’m a total Open Source evangelist if you give me half a chance, and dream of having a beard like Richard Stallman.
